In plain English, just why is Virtualisation so important to business and indeed, what is it?

Virtualisation brings massive cost savings to business because it substantially reduces the amount of hardware and associated costs required to run an organisation’s IT.

Traditionally, for each specific IT function (for example email, a database system or printing) a separate Server was required, because a single Server could only run a single application to which it was specifically dedicated.

For each and every User too, a costly, full-blown Desktop PC was required.

Virtualisation means that these old rules no longer apply, vastly cutting down on both the number and cost of boxes required to service the various functions of a business.

Much less hardware of course means much less capital investment, less power consumption from heating and cooling, less requirement for floor space and even, less carbon emissions.
