Talbot Heath School gears IT-self up for the start of term
 | Dorset based integrated IT solutions provider Deverill, has successfully implemented a faster, cheaper and greener IT system at Talbot Heath School, after securing the contract to deploy virtualisation software and thin client technology. Similar to many schools and businesses running aging IT systems, Talbot Heath School had multiple servers which were running at 5% of their capacity. The virtualisation process enabled Deverill to reduce the amount of physical servers by consolidating multiple servers onto one. Virtualisation has meant the school now benefits from cheaper management costs, a highly available IT infrastructure, and a greener IT system. With the system running from one server less energy is used and electricity costs are reduced. |
To maximise the benefit of a virtualised IT environment Deverill has also implemented ‘thin client’ technology at the school. This is where a thin client device replaces a traditional desktop computer and the device can be run and altered via a server. Software upgrades and fixes are quicker and easier to do as it just requires uploading onto the server and the computing devices will be updated simultaneously without having to update each PC individually, reducing overall management and desktop costs. Thin client devices are smaller, faster and cheaper than a usual PC and the life of an existing PC can be extended by converting it into a thin client device.
Joel Jervis, Chief Executive of Deverill said: “We are delighted to be able to work with Talbot Heath School. The way students are taught is changing and schools now more than ever need to keep up with the advances in IT. It’s great for Deverill to use its IT expertise in a way that helps the school meet the demands of modern teaching practices and aids their students learning. By implementing a virtualised IT environment and thin client technology the school has made a long term investment which will deliver fast, cheaper and greener IT. We have enjoyed a successful relationship with Talbot Heath School and look forward to continuing this relationship in the future.”
Allan Maule, Network Manager at Talbot Heath School says: “We have a longstanding working relationship with Deverill, we have worked with them on many other projects in the past. They have always offered a reliable service and the team are highly experienced, so naturally we thought of them when it came to choosing a provider for this phase of work. Deverill is also great at deploying new technologies, and as a result the school is now saving both money and time on its IT.”
